France prepares for potential disruptions at airports as air traffic controllers announce a strike

On Monday, Paris-Orly and Brest airports are set to face significant challenges as airport staff initiate a walkout. France is anticipating widespread airport disruptions as air traffic controllers participate in a strike. As a precautionary measure, up to half of all flights at certain airports may be canceled. Passengers traveling between the evening of December 17 and 6 am on December 19 should anticipate disruptions and delays. The French civil aviation authority, DGAC, has recommended that travelers consider postponing their trips if feasible. Additionally, individuals with flights scheduled during the strike period are advised to contact their airline before heading to the airport.

The strike in France will involve air traffic control workers from the CRNA Nord tower, responsible for managing airspace in the north of the country. Airports that could be affected include Paris-Orly, Lyon, Lille, Brest, Rouen, Poitiers, and Saint-Yan. However, airports like Paris Charles de Gaulle are not expected to experience cancellations.

Paris-Orly is expected to be significantly impacted, with DGAC (French civil aviation authority) ordering a 30% cancellation of flights to minimize disruption on the day. At Brest airport in Brittany, airlines have been asked to reduce their flights by 50%, and the decision on which flights to cancel is left to the individual airlines.

Minimum service provisions, designed to minimize disruptions for passengers, will be implemented where regulations allow, including at Paris-Orly, Poitiers, and Lyon.

It’s important to note that the strike could also lead to delays for overflights to and from other countries that utilize French airspace.
